From the very start, till now.
Just like you may be a great athlete, extremely intelligent, or whatever; Pit Bulls were originally bred for bull-baiting and subsequent blood sports.
Although genetics are a factor, environment also determines a lot.
Today's pit bull is a descendant of the original English bull-baiting dog—a dog that was bred to bite and hold bulls, bears and other large animals around the face and head. When baiting large animals was outlawed in the 1800s, people turned instead to fighting their dogs against each other.
That might sound a bit unnerving, but keep in mind although you may have a great physique, without training, you’re probably not a professional athlete. Or that you may be very intellectually sharp but without an education, a total dotard.
Epigenetics means how behaviors and environment can change how genes work, essentially, “turning genes on or off.”
With proper breeding practices and assertive (firm yet fair) training, a well rounded Pit Bull Terrier makes a great family pet.
Dogs can’t get a normal job, so as their caretakers, it’s our responsibility to provide the basic needs that all animals have: a clean area to live, plenty of sunshine and exercise, good food, and occasional cuddles.
